The Wrap Up: Hey Ciara, it’s been a while since we saw you in the UK. How are you and when will you be back over here?
Ciara: I’m great thank you, I’m doing really good. I’m in the US at the moment, but I hope to be back in the UK in the next couple of months. I love to shop in the UK and visit Mr Chow’s and Nobu restaurants in London. Oh, and Nandos of course!
TWU: Is working with a UK artist on your ‘to do’ list at the moment?
Ciara: I’ve worked with Natasha Bedingfield before at a cancer charity gig we did with Beyonce, Mary J Blige and others. I’m a fan of Dizzee Rascal, so who knows? I like Kylie Minogue too, she’s Australian? Oh!
TWU: I know charity work has been important to you. Do you have any other charity projects lined up?
Ciara: I do have plans to get more charity work going. I want to focus on the kids, and particularly young women, to give something back. I’d like to visit young women living in difficult situations across the world and help them to build their self esteem and confidence. They inspire me.
TWU: You’ve worked with Ludacris again on your new single, ‘Ride’. How was it working with him this time around?
Ciara: It was really fun. Ludacris is so down to earth and such a sweet person, he’s like family to me now. We have a great bond and great chemistry; he’s a really good friend of mine.
TWU: Do you have many collaborations on the new album, ‘Basic Instinct’?
Ciara: At the moment the collaborations on the album are really light. I didn’t wanna do as many this time as I have in the past; I wanted to do something very different. This album is more of me – from my own direct experiences and I wanted to do it like that for my fans.
TWU: BET have banned the video to ‘Ride’ in US. Do you think that it’s an overreaction?
Ciara: It’s definitely unfortunate that the video isn’t playing on that network. But with media and the Internet today, I’m fortunate that there are so many other platforms for people to see it. I’m very proud of it and I hope that in the future BET will play my videos.
TWU: It must be frustrating though, when you’ve worked really hard on something?
Ciara: Yeah it’s frustrating. I put a lot into the video and I want it to be seen in as many places as possible. But at least I know that my fans can watch the video elsewhere.
TWU: Was it a conscious decision to make a sexy video, or does it just come naturally to you?
Ciara: Making the video was a very organic process. It was really more of a way of complimenting and pulling out the vibe of the record. I don’t wanna force anything. It was definitely a surprise to me to hear it wouldn’t be played on BET. To be honest, when I reviewed the video, I did prepare myself for it to be cut in a few places or tweaked slightly, but I wasn’t prepared for it to be banned totally.
TWU: Tell us more about the album…
Ciara: The executive producers on the record are Tricky and Dream. This album is about me taking it back to the basics – it’s all about my fans. I’ve always made songs with them in mind, but this time I really want to make sure that I really give them what they want. I’ve kinda taken it back to where I started, the ‘Goodies’ days and I put a lot of passion into it and worked so hard to make it the best it can be. You’re gonna be able to dance to this album and enjoy it from beginning to end. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
TWU: What else are you working on at the moment?
Ciara: The biggest priority for me at the moment is the album. I’ve been putting together the promo work and focusing mainly on that. I’m at a shoot today for Essence Magazine, which is great, but my album is my baby right now.
